Esme Barrera: Austin Music Scene Figure Found Murdered on New Year's

Esme Barrera, a figure in the Austin music scene, was found murdered inside her home on New Year's Day. As BrooklynVegan reports, the 29-year-old El Paso native worked at Waterloo Records, volunteered at Girls Rock Austin and helped teach special-needs children at Casis Elementary School.

As of now, the killer has not been caught and the actual cause of death has not been revealed. Police have released a composite sketch and described the perpetrator as a black man between the ages of 30 and 40, approximately 6 feet tall.

Several musicians and figures in the indie world have expressed their sorrow over Barrera's tragic death. Rocker Ted Leo tweeted, "I was privileged to briefly know an inspirational person from Austin, Tx., who was murdered this NYE. Her name was Esme & she'll be missed." Electro duo YACHT wrote, "The world's lost a shining light, music cheerleader, and great human. Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Esme Barrera. No words."
